JAIPUR: Thrilling park rides, shows and a working movie studio accompanied by some fine restaurants and state-of-the-art cinema halls — all this might become a reality soon at the upcoming Jaipur Film City, which is being planned by the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA). The project is proposed to be developed on public private partnership basis as a studio-cum-entertainment destination.
The big movie studio will encourage movie producers to chose Jaipur as a destination for shooting of films, while visitors will get a glimpse of filmmaking. The JDA has submitted the proposal for approval to the state government following which developers will be invited.
"As per the proposal, the ownership of land will remain with JDA and it will only be provided on a limited period lease. Activities related to film production will be a necessary component. However, it will also be kept open for additional activities to make the project economically feasible," said JDA commissioner Sudhansh Pant.
Proposed over 900 acres of land near Sumel village located on the Jaipur-Agra highway, the project has been estimated to cost over Rs 1,000 crore. As per the initial plan, the ownership of land was to be transferred to the developer. However, due to the huge investment required, the project was unable to attract investors.
As the land will now be handed over on a lease basis, the initial investment required will be considerably reduced. The joy rides and other associated entertainment activities will help the developer to generate additional revenue. The proposals will be invited on Swiss Challenge basis.
"The interested parties might propose to develop it on the lines of Universal Studios or theme parks like Disneyland. Those ensuring the best facilities for the film industry and revenue benefits for the state government will get preference," added Pant.
According to JDA officials, Rajasthan holds immense potential for development of a film industry. The state has natural beauty of Aravali hills, desert and lakes, while the havelies, forts and palaces add to the heritage value. Availability of such a mega film studio will help to attract more film producers.
The Film City, if approved, will become another major tourist attraction for the Pink City. It would also serve as a boost to the ailing Rajasthani film industry, which has been facing challenges due to lack of infrastructure.
